10 Things for the 2014 Graduate to Know About The Journey of Life

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.
— Henry David Thoreau
What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

1. Enjoy the journey. All of life is ahead of you. You've finished the race. But you also know, it's just getting started. So - pace yourself. You don't have to have it all - riches, spouse, kids, the best job. You have a lifetime to let God being you on that journey. So don't rush through the moment.

2. When you feel like you are falling behind everyone else - go within. You will get to a point in your life, if you haven't already where you realize that there is more to life than every thing you want more of. You can't take your riches or job to the grave. But you can bring your memories and relationships. When it gets tough - just remember how far you've come and how much you have yet to live for - that isn't even part of your plan. Life is not a race for competition, it's just the race of your life.

3. Find faith. Things aren't going to go as you planned. Bad things DO happen to good people. Life happens to people. It's in those places that we wonder where God is in our lives, and it's in those space that we need to finally turn back to him after our season of adventure and say, "Hey God. I want I relationship with you now. You got the time for me?" I promise you that no matter how far you go, he will be right there waiting for you. No one is pressuring you, especially not Him. But know that he is there waiting for you to seek him through relationship so he can infuse every aspect of your life with undying, unconditional, agape love.

4. Trust God's timing. Remember what I said earlier - He's got a plan. It's just not yours. It's better and may not be what you think you want but will be what he knows is best for you in the long run. Trust Him especially in times of trial.

5. Know that your true worth lies within. People are going to make more money than you, have more than you, be thinner than you or more successful then you. It will distract you but you must know this - your worth does NOT lie on your surface. It lies within. Like I said before - go within every time your mind tells you that your worth is in your appearance or financial worth. It is in you.

 6. Run, but don't run. When life gets crazy, and REAL, it's important to stay active. If you like to run, keep it up. Exercise is a key element to maintaining stress. But what I'm really talking about here is how it's important not to run FROM life. When life gets tough, walk THROUGH it. Whatever it takes, walk through it. You'll hate it but in the end you'll be so happy you did.

 7. Know you are never alone. You aren't in college anymore or high school or grad school for that matter, where you have to have a mask. Permission granted now to drop the "I've got it all together" belief and just become who you were meant to be. Be rEal.

The world may not like it but your true self will shine. A lot of people just like you are graduating too. Try to seek out and walk beside those people who will support the journey of the real you, not the masked you.

8. Explore. You are going to travel. You are going to create many experiences for yourself. Take that time - when you are in nature or in a car on the way somewhere - to stop and smell the roses. Your true self will connect to so many things around you. So explore it and if you can - reflect on it, or take note of it. Those are the moments that make you grateful.

9. Bloom where you are planted. I can't emphasize this enough. Life is hard. Change is hard. You don't bloom in life by always running. You have experiences to live, but when you are in the middle of something or walking through the next phase of your life - just be still, as The Lord says. Sometimes to grow we've got to sit down, be patient and let God do what he wants in you.

10. Be YOU. This could be #1 but I saved it for last so you remember it. It's not an easy thing to do and takes a lifetime to figure out. But never give your power away to the wrong people in your life. Never let anyone steal your sunshine. Never believe for a second that "you" is something you have to possess. It is always, always within you. The rest of it is just the lessons and the blessings The Lord gives you along the way.

Oh and one more thing. Actually two. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.

(This song is dedicated to my brother who introduced me to this song and it always inspires me when I'm about to walk down a new road.)
