What God May Be Showing Us When We Go Through Deep Waters

This isn't about resolutions but sticking to a vision even when your plans for the new year don't go according to YOUR plan. It's about what God is showing us when that happens. As I've been going through deep waters the last few weeks with healing, physical pain and even emotional pain, I've been seeing just what I think God tries to show us at these times and I want you to hear what God's teaching me as it may help you. At the time of year when we make it all about performance, it's important to know that grace is all we need. When we've got an agenda, He may have another plan - a detour for us to heal us in ways that only He can. We just gotta trust God in the detours.

Verses to Look Up for Study: Isaiah 43:10, Psalm 73:26

5 things to remember to do when we’re going through tough times:

  1. Seek God First. Matthew 6:33
  2. Feel what we Gotta feel and trust Him to guide you. John 14:27
  3. Know he’s with you in it - won’t leave us or forsake us. Deuteronomy 31:6
  4. Feel the fear but trust him. Isaiah 41:10
  5. Whatever happens, he’s working it out for our good. Romans 8:28

Lastly, this song came to me as I was preparing this message today and this version came up. Thought it was a great version of God working in pop culture:

Why You are MORE than "Good Enough" for God

How often do you feel that sense of "not good enough?" I am sure you've felt it; or thought it recently. "I'm not good enough." "I'm not doing enough." "There isn't enough for me." The list goes on.  It's not a very nice way of talking to ourselves. So let's call it out that Unhealthy Voice and change our perspective. God loves us even when we're in a funk of feeling of "not good enough." No matter what it is we are in a funk about - he still loves us. He stands willing and ready to fill up as only he can - our not enough tank. He wants us to bring all that stuff we feel/think we aren't good enough to Him so he can take care of us.

But this isn't an easy place to get to. We have to make an effort to listen for what God's telling us in regards to that not good enough so we can walk through it with His help. So, here's how it went for me last week.

I'm starting off with two songs that helped me during my "not good enough" funk last week. The first one is called "Enough" by Jeremy camp.  No surprise I heard it on the very day I was struggling with that "not good enough." Of course I would! That's how God works....take a listen. It reminded me that HE is enough for me, so much more than all my insecurities.

"All of you is more than enough for all of me for every thirst and every need, you satisfy me, with your love and all I have in you is more than enough."

The second song I also heard multiple times last week. It reminded me that when I'm feeling that "not good enough" gunk ("Hold it all together everybody needs you strong"), God just wants to me to "lay it down and let it go...stop holding on and just be held." "Your world's not falling apart. It's falling into place." They were just some of the words I needed to hear in that place.

Anyway, back to our "not enough." What IS it about that? It's like the human condition where the enemy loves to get us. Even if that hole in our heart has been healed because we've got God, it CAN still come back. The enemy never stops working hard. I think this is especially true for the world that we live in today. Social media makes it so easy for us to compare ourselves and think what we're doing isn't enough or who we ARE isn't enough. We think, "I need to catch up," somehow. It's like a secret shame - behind the news feed - where we think "I'm not good enough." It's amazing how our eyes can so tempt us to believe someone else has it better than us. No one does. We've all got our stuff. I know...

You know what else this whole "not good enough" belief does? It keeps us from giving ourselves permission to BE ourselves. In the process we disregard the gifts God has placed in our laps for us to share with the world. That's exactly what happened with me last week. I was so busy worrying about getting things done, getting a blog posted that I was not seeing what God was trying to tell me - until I was (watch my message video this week and you'll see).

So, these are the verses that were brought to me this week.

1 John 2:16 NLT "For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we SEE, and pride in our achievements and our possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world." I know it's hard, but we have to remember that we find ourselves striving for "good enough" that we may just be craving rewards from the world and if we know Christ we know that these cravings can't satisfy us the way only He can.

138:8 AMP says, "The lord will accomplish that which concerns me; Your [unwavering] loving kindness, O Lord, endures forever - Do not abandon the works of Your own hands." I read that and saw how it is the LORD who will accomplish what concerns me. If I'm wanting to get a message done, HE will take care of it. It's not up to me and my timing.

Ephesians 2:10 says, "For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago." Who are we to put ourselves down or the gifts he gives us to share with the world? "We are God's masterpiece!!"

Finally, 2 Corinthians 3:5 NLT, "It is not that we think we are qualified to do anything on our own. Our qualifications come from God." God qualifies us. We don't have to worry about making ourselves qualified to do His work on earth.

So - all that being said, when you got that "I'm not good enough" voice going on, get back to the truth. Get back to the fact that you are good enough for God and HE loves you. That's all that matters in those moments of insecurity. He loves us. PERIOD. End of sentence.

And if you are doing that, "I'll be good enough when _______", just catch yourself and realize you are doing it again and remember, you are good enough. Work towards your goals but remember you are enough in Christ at this very moment.

So with that, check out my message video this week, it's quick and short because I want you to be able to go deeper with yourself on that not good enough voice you've got. Be gentle and receive God's love. Ask for the grace to give yourself a break and see yourself how God sees you, and if you'd like - share with me on social media or here what is your strongest "not good enough" voice. Go ahead, be vulnerable!! Mine is definitely around being a stepmom for one, and my work for another. Really have to be nice to myself on both of those. So, here you go!!

Freedom from Labels: A Reflection on National Stepfamily Day from Someone who Get's It!

Here you go. A delayed message for your week and day. Happy National Stepfamily Day! Hope the message helps and instead of music for extra inspiration, you've got images! One is a new thing I'm trying called #healthyvoicetakeaway. A lot of times I'll take a note on a card while I'm preparing the message, when I'm cooking or something as it comes to me so today I just thought I'd post it for you!

A Healthy Voice Message on Navigating Through Loss and Trauma in Life

Here is a link to all of Psalm 107 (NIV), and here is the section I spoke on the message, verses 13-20.

Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness and the deepest gloom and broke away the chains. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men, for her breaks down the gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron. Some became fools through their rebellious ways and suffered affliction because of their iniquities. They loathed all food and drew near the gates of death. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble and he saved them from distress. He sent forth his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave.

Healthy Voice Message: When We Plan and God Says "Wait"

Check out today's video devotional here, if you haven't seen it....

The verses I shared were focused on how God's got a plan that is greater than our plan. I encourage you to go and read the chapters in context and maybe add one or all of these verses to your favorites list of scriptures.

Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.
— Proverbs 19:21
For I know the plans I have for you”, declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
— Jeremiah 29:11
In his heart, a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.
— Proverbs 16:9

"Greater", a Devotional from your Healthy Voice

In today's video message I played the song, "He Knows My Name" by Francesca Batistelli. Amazing song, voice and artist. Check her out. (If you've struggled on your journey with an eating disorder, you may relate to her longer version here.  But here's the basic video with audio if you just want to listen to the lyrics. Here's the actual lyrics if you want to read them.

I shared two verses from the Bible.

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.
— 1 John 4-6, NIV
He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.
— John 3:30, NLT

There were two more songs I wanted to share with you in your devotional time on this message. One is "Greater" by Mercy Me and the other is "Be Lifted High" by Elevation Worship. Both I wanted to share the video because one is inspiring visually and the other is great for worship.

I shared was a quote from a book by a Pastor in North Carolina named Steven Furtick. His book is called, "Greater". Here's a link to lots of resources and the book. Here's the quote (long one!)

God’s greater purpose in any area of your life means giving up your false expectation of greatness to find the greater things He’s called only you to do. It means giving up on what others can do that you wish you could do and what you would do if you had certain gifts that you, candidly, do not have and may never develop. When you embrace the limitations of your current life situation and decide to trust God completely and cooperate with Him fully in this season of your life, even greater things are possible.
— Steven Furtick from his Book "Greater"

My final thought for you was to think about what or who you are putting on a pedestal that is greater than God. When in your life do you need to let go and let God make the plays and you step back on the sidelines?

Oh, and one more thing. Walk in Love who I mentioned at the end, here's their site. They make and do great things. Check them out, double props for being from my home state.

If all these resources hadn't been created by people who let God inspire their hearts, I wouldn't have been able to share the message. And if it wasn't for God, I wouldn't even know it. SO! Props to all mentioned here and for everything you do for His glory!!
